Linda James
Cirrus 5

22.5" x 30"

Watercolor and Soft Pastel on Paper

Linda James received a BFA in Painting from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. While raising a family, her first artistic focus was as a fiber artist, creating ikat color field wall hangings. She and artist Joanne Mattera started a weaving studio in Albany, NY in 1975 where they worked on commissions, taught classes and trained apprentices. Linda later studied herbal medicine in the 90s/2000s in addition to working as a graphic designer. It was her intense study of the green world that brought her in touch with the vibrational nature of the universe. She returned to painting when she moved to Seattle in 2004. Exploring the emotional and spiritual vibration of color has always been a focus, ever since she saw her first Mark Rothko painting in 1967. The Color Field Painters were exploring an art form based solely on color that could be a vehicle for transcendence. Color, like music, can have that impact. Linda strives as well to achieve that kind of response with her paintings. She has been an instructor at Gage Academy of Art since 2016 and also teaches watercolor classes from her studio in Seattle. Her art has always been influenced and inspired by the unseen vibrational aspects of all living things and the universe in general. Her paintings continue to be exhibited regionally and are in numerous private collections throughout the U.S.
